The recognised inmates are participating in Adult Education and Training (AET) programmes from level one to four.

After dropping out of school at a young age, Gerald Pandle (50) of Wattville has returned to class to fulfil his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Despite choices that led to his incarceration in 2003 for murder and robbery, Gerald believes it’s never too late to become someone in life.

He and 50 other inmates from the Modderbee Correctional Services were awarded certificates and trophies on March 6 for academic excellence in 2023.

These inmates are participating in Adult Education and Training (AET) programmes from level one to four, which is equivalent to Grade One to Nine, in the correctional centre.

Certificates of achievement were also handed out to top performing learners studying N2 engineering, business studies, N4 marketing and ICDL (International Computer Driving Licence).

Inmates who participated in the Funda Mzantsi programme, aimed at equipping inmates with reading, spelling, book review and debate skills, were also awarded.

In celebrating the inmates’ educational journeys, ex-offenders who are now famous in the entertainment industry were invited to encourage inmates to continue equipping themselves with education to become ideal citizens.

Actor and singer Israel Matseke Zulu and Themba Lukhele ‘Skeem GP’, who is an author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker formed part of the many distinguish guests.

Well-known actor and singer Israel Matseke Zulu advised inmates during the awards ceremony to use their time sufficiently while in prison.
Themba Lukhele ‘Skeem GP’, who is an author, entrepreneur and motivational speaker formed part of the many distinguished guests.

Speaking to the inmates, Zulu said while serving his jail term he decided to use his time sufficiently by writing his first play using damaged pens and candles.

“Rehabilitation is a personal struggle, you must prove yourself that you are ready for change. Reconstruct your lives because crime doesn’t pay.

“Study to create employment for yourself and other people. I believe that behind a successful person, there’s sacrifice and commitment so deny yourself fun to reach your goals,” said Matseke.

Elias Hlongwane (educator) and Israel Matseke Zulu award Costa Rosy who came in second position in the level one category.
Over 50 inmates attended the awards ceremony.

Themba advised inmates not to become residents of prison but to thrive and change for the better in prison.

Inmates also had an opportunity to showcase their singing and dancing talents during the event.
