Garlands get to the root of self-discovery

“Life is bit to be judged by the perception of you, but rather the experience you feel by living it.”

Unlocking your true self starts by making one conscious decision at a time to become more vulnerable.

Dressed in a variety of shades of pink, members of the Garlands Ladies Luncheon Club and their guests gathered at Ebotse’s Katse Room, to engage with renowned human lie-detector and master life coach, Lizette Volkwyn, on February 22.

With cutesy cartoon characters printed on her jeans, Lizette’s lustre and passion for life filled the room, immediately capturing the attention of her audience.

“We are taught to pretend yet we choose to fake confidence rather than face vulnerability,” she said, opening her talk titled, ‘The triumph of vulnerability’.

“We are led to believe that being vulnerable means that we go sit in a corner and sob for hours on end.

“But when we ask for help, stop hiding behind labels and commit to finding ourselves, that is the birthplace of love, belonging, empathy creativity and authenticity.”

She said when embracing the journey to vulnerability you soon realise that it is healthy and essential to show your emotions.

“When we accept our emotions and welcome their presence in our lives, it becomes easier to figure out your likes, dislikes, where we belong and ultimately find your truest self,” said Lizette.

Her top tips for delving into vulnerability are:
• Embrace your strengths and work on honing them. Attempt to be 1% better than you were yesterday.

• Be kind to your weaknesses. Nothing is personal, someone else’s views of you are purely based on their opinions, beliefs, upbringing and personal circumstances.

• Enjoy the journey of transformation. Growth comes from being vulnerable. “Be patient, get comfortable and have confidence in your unique journey,” she said.

• Be willing to put the work in. By showing the world the rawest version of yourself, showing up and being consistent, like-minded individuals will gravitate to you offering support, care and empathy.

• Do not listen to the nay-sayers.

• Expect to fail. Failure is inevitable but it does not mean that you have to quit. When you embrace your failures you give yourself and others permission to live fully, despite facing obstacles.

• Seek alternatives. If one door closes adjust and realign your efforts.

• A change in lifestyle gives you the opportunity to live and experience life fully.

Due to the upcoming Easter holidays, the Garlands will meet again on April 25, for face yoga.
