Sexual offences unit places second nationally

The unit secured 68 successful convictions during the 2022/2023 financial year.

The Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) was named first runner-up in the SAPS National Excellence Awards.

Representing the unit, Colonel Cecile Veldman received the award at a prestigious ceremony at Gallagher Estate on February 16.

“I am incredibly proud of each member of our team,” she said.

“They work tirelessly to ensure that justice prevails and it shows. We have received countless commendations from local magistrates and prosecutors for maintaining good working relationships with those within the justice system.

“Members have further been commended for the professional manner in which investigations are conducted as well as the meticulous manner in which case dockets are submitted.”

Despite the accolades that have been bestowed on the unit, Veldman says that the successful conviction as well as the tracing of serial rapists through DNA linkage are all feathers in the unit’s cap.

“During the 2022/2023 financial year the unit secured 68 convictions and added the names of nine offenders to the National Register of Sexual Offenders,” she said.

“It is our vision to ensure that the district is a safer place for the community.
