Suspected copper thieves also charged with bribery
The two foreign nationals were found in possession of suspected stolen copper.
Two men, aged 42 and 47, were arrested on charges of being in possession of suspected stolen goods as well as bribery, on February 19.
According to Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS), officers were conducting routine stop-and-search operations along the R23, High Road.
“At 07:30 a Toyota truck, transporting empty tin cans, was pulled over,” he said.
“The two male occupants appeared nervous which prompted the BFS members to intensify their search.”
Hidden under the goods, four bags containing copper valued at an estimated R60 000 were discovered.
“Not being able to give a reasonable explanation for being in possession of the suspected stolen goods, the suspects, who are both foreign nationals, were immediately arrested,” said Giblin.
“Upon their arrest the suspects offered officers R10 000 for their release. An additional charge of bribery has been brought against them.”
BFS commander Lieutenant Colonel Tali Lukhele commended the members for the sterling work and showing criminals that bribery will not be tolerated.
