Middle distance runners dominate while sprinters struggle at CGA event

The athletes are competing to be selected in the team to represent CGA at the nationals in March.

Jade Doran won her second 1500m steeplechase event while Gift Nkosi dominated the U20 women’s 3000m and 5000m races in the third CGA track and field league meeting at Germiston Stadium on February 4.

Doran sliced four seconds off her previous time of 05:37 from the second meeting after breasting the tape in an improved 05:33 in the U16 girls’ event, which featured 12 hurdles and three obstacles.

Nkosi, from East Athletic Club (EAC), stormed to the finish in 11:01:34 for the first spot in the 3000m and clocked an impressive sub-20 in the 5000m after finishing the race in 19:59.

Nkosi’s teammate, Avuma Pheza won the U20 men’s 3000m steeplechase, cutting the tape in 11:14:30 for the gold while Nqobile Maseko was third in the U18 women’s 2000m steeplechase after crossing the line in 09:15:54.

The Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC)’s Kevin Hickley clinched second place in the U20 men’s 5000m, clocking 15:14, three seconds behind national 5km juniors’ champion, Zenzile Pheko.

The EAC’s Azelia Zitha and Ofentse Modiselle were second in the U18 women’s and U20 men’s 3000m races, with Zitha clocking 11:08 while Modiselle posted 09:28, for the silver.

In the short distances, the Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) sprinter Keira Fouchè clocked a quick 26.16 seconds for the second spot in the U18 women’s 200m while BNAC’s Logan Oosthuizen clocked 23.32 to finish fifth in the boys’ U16 200m.

Fouchè finished in fourth place in the 100m while Oosthuizen completed the top five in his category after clocking 12.06.

In the hurdles, the BNAC’s Kearabetswe Kau won the U20 women’s race in 13:58 while Jordan-Lee Longstaff, from BHAC, was fifth in the U16 girls’ category, after clocking 17:45.

In the field events, the BAC’s Inge Boshoff cleared 10.53m to win the U18 women’s triple jump while Kau was second in the same event, but in the U120 category, after throwing a decent 11.14m.

Kau’s teammate Moetlo Sefoka was second in the high jump after clearing 1.85m while Seth Agliotti, from BAC, rounded up the podium with a leap of 1.80m for third place.

BHAC thrower Owen Dalzell threw an improved 59.30m, better than his 50.70m in the second meeting, for a second place in the U18 men’s javelin and his teammate, Mieke Basson cleared 10.11m and 30.38m to finish in third place in the U20 women’s shot put and discus, respectively.

The runners will have another chance to improve on these performance in the next meeting on February 17 at Germiston Stadium.
