EMPD cracks down on by-law infringements

A Cloverdene hardware owner was issued with the written notice for operating without the required trading permit.

From January 8 to 12, members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct cracked down on Crystal Park businesses as part of its by-laws enforcement operations.

Various businesses, including scrap dealers and general traders, were visited throughout the area and in Chief Albert Luthuli as part of routine inspections.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, most of the businesses were found to be in compliance of council requirements. However, written notices were issued to some who had neglected to heed previous verbal warnings.

“Expired perishable food was confiscated from various tuck shops as well as informal food traders,” said Thepa.

Expired foods were confiscated and destroyed.

“The goods were deemed not fit for human consumption and were responsibly disposed.”

She said that these blitzes will continue to stamp out illegal trading.

“By-law compliance is essential and is aimed at safeguarding the community as well as business owners. We urge current as well as potential traders to apply for the relevant permits at their nearest Ekurhuleni customer care centre.”
