Welfare society holds AGM

Actonville Child and Family Welfare Society render statutory social work and child protection services to children.

The Actonville Child and Family Welfare Society has again sustained its stable financial position despite the heightened challenges it faced during the year.

The organisation recently held its 34th AGM at the society’s premises in Actonville.

The society renders statutory social work and child protection services to children.

Its main office is in Actonville and there are satellite offices in Wattville and Kingsway.

Presenting his chairperson’s report, Mohamed Sirkhot said they encountered hurdles during the last financial year but managed to pull through successfully

“Due to the efficiency of our long-serving treasurer and our administrator, we are proud to report that we have received a clean audit from the Department of Social Development. Though we have overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, we continue to see children going hungry, more cases of GBV, drugs and teenage pregnancies due to our country’s socio-economic challenges.”

He said during the last financial year, they had dealt with several cases related to abandoned children.

“More people are moving into surrounding informal settlements under our jurisdiction. It puts more pressure on our dedicated social workers and increases their caseloads.”

Sirkhot said they are now financially stable thanks to monthly help from a local business.

Social work services
During the meeting, the society’s chief social worker, Haneefa Chitimbe, said their social workers are swamped with high caseloads as they deal with more than 100 cases per social worker, which hampers services.

“We are also seeing an overwhelming number of reported cases of drug dependency that is leading to more dysfunctional families, creating a need to remove children from their families with no alternative placement.

Financials
According to an audited financial statement, the total comprehensive income for the year amounted to R277 932, while their total assets amounted to R307 543.

The society’s gross revenue increased slightly from R2 191 348 to R2 366 140. Expenditure compared with last year increased from R2 215 510 to R2 285 418.
