Flying squad keeps criminals in check

Officers are applauded for their dedication to the fight against crime.

While many are settling into a slower pace with the festive season approaching, Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members have kicked their operations into fifth gear, continuing the fight against crime.

From December 13 to 17, the unit arrested five suspects and recovered five vehicles and two motorcycles.

Hijacking
On December 14 at 10:00, Sergeant Jaco Powell and Constable Juan-Mare Eksteen followed up on information about a Toyota Quantum hijacked in Kriel.

“Information led the officers to a panel beater on Kempston Avenue,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the BFS spokesperson.

“Members did not find the vehicle at the premises but arrested a 30-year-old man when he was found in possession of seats, suspected to have been removed from the vehicle in question.”

Stolen motorcycles
On December 15 at 10:00, Warrant Officer Riaan Nel and Sergeant Nick Muller acted on information from a tracking company that a white Toyota Quantum was allegedly transporting a stolen motorcycle on the N12.

The vehicle, with three occupants, was located and brought to a stop on Moroleng Street, Daveyton.

“The green Kawasaki, stolen in Meyerton, was found inside the vehicle, and the suspects were arrested,” said Giblin.

“Following up on further information, the officers recovered a yellow and blue Yamaha on Ratoli Street, Palm Ridge. It was reported as stolen in Heidelberg.”

Reckless and negligent driving
A 56-year-old man was arrested on December 16 on the R562, Olifantsfontein, on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Abandoned vehicles
Five abandoned vehicles were recovered.

The vehicles were reported as hijacked and stolen in Thembisa, Rabie Ridge, Olifantsfontein and Garsfontein.

The vehicles included a white Isuzu truck, a white Ford Ranger, a white Nissan Nivara, a blue Toyota Corolla and a white Toyota Fortuner.

Drowning
Between December 8 and 14, divers from the SAPS Gauteng Water Policing and Diving Services were deployed to three separate incidents of drowning, which led to the recovery of the bodies of all the victims.

• On December 9, members responded to a scene on the Vaal River, Sedibeng.

On the same day, teams were deployed to Hammanskraal, where they recovered the body of a man from under debris in the Apies River at Bedrock Valley.

The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Investigations into the victim’s identity and cause of death are underway.

• Johannesburg members were deployed to Fleurhof Dam, Florida, on December 10, where they recovered a body next to the dam wall at the eastern shore.
