Benoni-born athlete triumphs in Olympic qualifier

This victory secured their place and earned SA a spot in the K2 500m sprint at Paris 2024.

Nicholas Weeks, a former Benoni High School learner and paddler at the East Rand Kayak Club (ERK) is on the cusp of realising a lifelong dream of competing in the Olympic Games.

Weeks partnered with Chrisjan Coetzee from Cape Town in the K2 event at the Africa Olympic Qualifying Championships in Abuja, Nigeria, on November 24.

This event was the continental qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In a show of skill and determination, Weeks and Coetzee took the top spot in the K2 500m sprint. This victory secured their place and earned SA a coveted spot in the K2 500m sprint at Paris 2024.

A sprint qualifying event is scheduled for March to ascertain the fastest K2 paddlers for selection to represent SA at the Games.

Furthermore, Weeks showcased his prowess by winning the K1 500m, K2 200m, and K2 1 000m events in Abuja.

His remarkable achievements underscore his dedication and the potential for a formidable showing on the global stage at the Olympic Games.
