Crime fighting units arrest 114 suspects

Operations will intensify throughout the festive season.

Members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) and Rapid Response Service (RRS) have arrested 114 suspects during routine operations, from November 24 to December 1.

The local BFS conducted routine operations while RRS members, including K9 units, Highway Patrol and Flying Squad participated in concentrated operations throughout the province.

The following successes were recorded:

Stolen truck
On November 29, at 21:00, BFS officers received information from Crime Intelligence regarding suspects offloading stolen property from a truck in Olifantsfontein.

“Officers arrived at the address on the M57, where they found five suspects,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“The suspects had allegedly offloaded 36 pallets of mayonnaise valued at R1-million.”

A 9mm Luger pistol was found hidden in a silver Volkswagen Polo, which as allegedly used during the hijacking of a truck transporting mayonnaise, in Diepsloot.

Further investigation revealed that the truck and two trailers from which the goods had been off-loaded had been hijacked in Diepsloot.

The suspects were arrested, the truck and trailers impounded and the goods were returned to the lawful owner.

“While waiting for the scene to be processed, officers noticed a silver Volkswagen Polo, parked on the premises,” he said.

“It was established that the vehicle had been used by the suspects. A thorough search led to the discovery of a 9mm Luger pistol with three live rounds of ammunition hidden under the steering column.”

Abandoned truck
A Scania truck with two trailers was found abandoned in Simpson Street, Germiston. It was hijacked in Thembisa.

RSS successes
Routine concentrated operations conducted by RRS officers led to the arrest of 109 suspects across Gauteng.

Forty-four suspects were arrested for priority crimes including assault with the intention of causing grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, being in the county illegally, theft, robbery, possession of suspected stolen goods, execution of an arrest warrant, murder, rape, attempted hijacking, pointing of a firearm and driving under the influence.

“Officers recovered 52 stolen and hijacked vehicles accompanied by 18 arrests on charges of being in possession of these cars,” said Giblin.
“Six unlicensed firearms were also recovered and seven arrests were made for possession.”

Further policing led to the arrest of 40 suspects on charges of being in possession of drugs with the intent to sell.

Heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax and meth were confiscated.
