What a dam view!

The residents of Alphen Park were gifted this exclusive calendar featuring mesmerising images of Homestead Dam’s beauty.

For the past 40 years, Derek and Joyce Dingwall have witnessed some of the most spectacular sunrises, painting the sky above Homestead Dam in radiant hues of purple and pink.

With their patio set on the banks of one of the city’s most popular water bodies, they have witnessed it become overgrown with hyacinth and watched in dismay when the water receded as droughts ravaged the Earth.

As the seasons have come and gone, the Alphen Park couple and other residents have played an integral role in establishing the Homestead Conservancy, which has effectively removed invasive plants from the waters, thus creating a recreational oasis for all to enjoy.

Armed with their camera, Derek and Joyce have captured countless images of nature in its serene beauty.

“The images we have captured of the dam have been breathtaking, especially the magnificent sunrises,” said Derek.

“We have an Alphen Park as well as conservancy Whatsapp group where I have shared some of these photos for everyone to enjoy.”

With prompting from Joyce and residents, the pair enlisted the help of neighbour Linda Williams, who sifted through the images, selecting 12 to feature in the exclusive Sunrises over Alphen Park 2024 calendar.

“In celebration of our 40th anniversary in our home, we decided to gift the community these calendars,” he said.

“Our home has offered us shelter when our hearts have been broken, the bird song became the soundtrack of our celebrations, and the tranquillity of the water has reminded us to enjoy every moment. This is what we wanted to celebrate and share with others.”

Joyce continued by saying that the gift is not only a visual representation of the suburb’s iconic landmark but rather that of a community that cares.

“Our little gated community bands together to carry neighbours through good times and bad,” she said.

“I just wanted them all to know they are appreciated and loved.”

George’s Bakery was used as a distribution point to ensure all 100 calendars found their way into Alphen Park homes.

“I was blown away by the response from our friends in the community. Some were even sending the calendars to their children abroad, kids who roamed these streets,” said Derek.

“As a result, donations of R7 000 have been deposited into the conservancy account, which will assist in our efforts to keep the dam healthy.”

Given its popularity, Derek is considering making the calendar available to the rest of the community, with funds raised earmarked for the conservancy fund.

“I invite local businesses to sponsor a page. That will cover the printing costs,” he said.

“I am immensely proud of what we have produced and would love to share it with the rest of the city.”
