Benoni SPCA operating as normal amid distemper outbreak

To prevent further spread of canine distemper, ensure that your dogs are fully vaccinated.

The Benoni SPCA is operating as per normal amid a recent outbreak of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) in the Benoni area.

The society has in the last few weeks seen a sharp increase in distemper and parvo cases

The distemper virus is a highly contagious viral disease affecting dogs worldwide, presenting with systemic symptoms respiratory issues, gastrointestinal problems, and often, neurological complications.

According to Benoni SPCA manager Jacques Cronje, the outbreak has been contained and the society has not really been affected by the outbreak.

“Luckily we haven’t had an outbreak. Last week we had two dogs that had distemper surrendered to us by their owners. Unfortunately they were too sick and could not be saved. A week before that three dogs came in with the distemper virus while four puppies were affected with the parvo virus,” said Cronje.

Cronje urged the public to ensure their dogs are up-to-date with their vaccines.

An all-in-one vaccine which fights against rabbies, distemper and other viruses is available at the SPCA for R300.

To prevent further spread of canine distemper, the SPCA requests the public to:
• Ensure their dogs are fully vaccinated according to guidelines
• Secure their dogs within their yards to prevent roaming
• Prevent interactions with unknown animals
• Keep high-risk dogs away from public spaces.
If you suspect your dog may have canine distemper symptoms, seek immediate veterinary care.

If you cannot afford the assistance of a registered veterinarian, contact the Benoni SPCA for further assistance.
