St Columba is this month’s quiz champs

St Columba’s School won by 42 points, Farrarmere Primary came second with 39 points, and St Dunstan’s College finished in third place.

This month’s Benoni City Times Quizmasters on October 19 was so tight only three points separated the winners and runners-up.

The schools were evenly matched in most categories, but in the end, newbies St Columba’s left the venue, Smith’s Cafè, as the winners with 42 points.

“We didn’t prepare that much like we expected the other teams to. We practically read through the newspaper a few times, and thanks to two of my teammates who capitalised on the Benoni City Times category,” said St Columba’s Alessio Marcon.

Farrarmere Primary School’s Riley Glass, Tshegofatso Mashaba, Yohitan Veramoothea and Caylum de Wet with BCT copies they used to prepare for the quiz.

“We found the geography and history category the most challenging, especially the question about the Charles de Gaulle Airport,” he said.

“This taught us a lot about teamwork and being composed under pressure. We also learnt that we should trust our guts and understand that it’s not always about winning,” said learner Praveen Lingoomiah.

From St Dunstan’s College: Sebastian Dias, Meahal Bhagwandas, Hanani Ndhlovu and Logan Cronje.

Teacher and mentor Kerryn Tempest thanked the learners for proudly representing the school.

“They did it all on their own. They are super-clued up on general knowledge. They thirst for knowledge and are always reading newspapers and engaging with each other on current affairs. They are wonderful learners to teach,” said Tempest.
