Solar panels brings light at Abraham Kriel Children’s Home

The solar power will bring relief to the beneficiaries who left at a disadvantage with their school work when power cuts occur.

Christmas came early this year for beneficiaries of Abraham Kriel Children’s Home who received a generous donation of solar panels to the value of R90 000 from Benoni Rotary Club.

The much-needed donation sparked excitement for house parents and beneficiaries as they permanently said goodbye to load-shedding and power outages.

According to President Annie Steijn, as part of Rotary projects which looks after communities, they thought it would be a good idea to reach out to the children’s home after learning that it becomes difficult for the children to study during load-shedding.

The club treasurer, Margaret Pappas, said since it is exam season, solar power will make things easier for the children to have a better studying environment.

Expressing gratitude for the donation received, Marius Myburgh, the house father said most of the beneficiaries have suffered trauma so they don’t like to be in a dark place.

“Since the installation of this system, we don’t even notice that it’s load-shedding. The donation has really helped us a lot. The children feel much safer and their homework is done on computers without interruptions. Another couple have promised to donate the same solar power to increase the operation capacity,” said Myburgh.

Pointing at the installed power panels are Margaret Pappas (Benoni Rotary Club treasurer), Marius Myburgh (house father) and Annie Steijn (Benoni Rotary Club president).

The president of Benoni Rotary Club said previously they’ve also opened their hearts to the home by donating Christmas gifts for the children.

Meanwhile, the Benoni satellite home, which houses 14 children and house parents, is in need of donations including food and clothes.

“To keep our house sustainable, donations on a regular basis are needed. Companies and individuals can make a financial donation and may request tax certificates which can be submitted to SARS for a tax deduction,”
