VOX: Why is regular cancer screening important?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month started on October 1 and will conclude at the end of the month. We asked residents to share with their thoughts on the importance of having regular cancer screenings.

Fana Mokhine (Daveyton): After the death of Thulani Nxele to cancer, we realised that, as men, we are ignorant. We take things lightly and only act when it’s too late. Let’s act now. Don’t be ashamed. Let’s check regularly if we are okay. We can prevent many things.

Rochel Jacobs (Reiger Park): In 2020, I lost my mom to cancer and in 2021 my sister died of cervical cancer. My niece is also fighting cancer. It’s very important to get screened early.

Sakhele Gqabaza (Daveyton): We must constantly go to the doctor and get ourselves checked up. Let’s make sure they check everything up so that they pick up the small illnesses early. Cancer, in particular, it’s important that it’s detected early so that it can be managed.

Portia Nonkonyana (Cloverdene): My mom has been fighting breast cancer since 2020. They have removed her breasts and we’ve discovered the cancer has spread to her lungs. Let’s do regular screenings. It’s important, especially for women. They have to get their breasts, wombs and other parts checked.

Dudu Mthimunye (Benoni): It’s very important to look after ourselves. Let’s go to the clinic and screen for cancer. It hides and only reveals itself once it’s already advanced. It’s imperative for men because they are afraid to go to the clinic. I urge them to check themselves regularly so that we can keep them healthy because they are our pillars.
