ESS Benoni wins Friendship cup at Camp Discovery

The team scored over 30 goals with striker Galalelo Marumo topping the charts with 22 goals.

The Euro Soccer Schools (ESS) Benoni’s U13 team clinched the Camp Discovery Soccer Friendship Cup after beating ESS Kempton Park 2-0 in the final on September 24 at Camp Discovery in Pretoria.

The Benonians were undefeated in the tournament, winning nine round-robin matches and only drawing one.

The wins included an 11-0 defeat of ESS North and a 7-0 mauling of ESS Kempton Park in the group stages. They also beat the ESS invitational teams one and two 4-0 and 3-2 respectively.

In the semi-finals, they met neighbours ESS Sunward Park, who proved a tough challenge as the match was decided on penalties. Benoni won and advanced to the final.

The club’s Galalelo Marumo was named the player of the tournament after netting 22 goals. Goalkeeper Uday Ramphal-Bhoola won the goalkeeper of the tournament award after ending the tournament with nine clean sheets.

“I’m very proud of our U13s’ achievement. They worked hard and it was evident in their results. Well done gentlemen,” said coach Kyle Chetty.
