Bartlett hockey player receives ‘biggest achievement’ of career
“I’m happy and honoured to have received the prize as MVP of the club. It is my first big achievement in my hockey career.”
When Kesha-Lee Nel (13) was announced as the Benoni Northerns Club’s U13 girls’ team’s MVP, she stumbled onto the stage to collect her award in astonishment.
This achievement shocked the Bartlett resident because she never anticipated she would win, given the depth of talent in her team.
“I was surprised because there were a lot of other girls, and all of them have the potential to become good hockey players,” she said.
In her first season playing for the club, the Laerskool Concordia learner said this was her “biggest achievement” as a hockey player.
“I’m happy and honoured to have received the prize as MVP of the club. It is my first big achievement in my hockey career.”
The youngster attributed her success to her coaches, who, she said, played a crucial role in ensuring she adapted quickly to Northerns’ culture despite some difficulties early on.
“It was hard in the beginningbecause it was my first year playing for the club. I had to adapt to the team and position, but the more I played, the more I adjusted.
“The coaches helped me develop my skills. They also push and allow me to take risks on the field and guide the other girls,” said Nel.
She said the match that defined her season was against the Shumbas, when she had an excellent game, especially in defence.
“It was in a game against the Shumbas, an amazing team. I was now a team member and had adapted to how we played. I played a good defence game.”
The Grade Six learner started playing hockey as a five-year-old. She said she felt at home on the field with her stick in hand and ready to hit the ball.
“I am a risk-taker and always seek opportunities to grow as an individual. My parents bought me a hockey stick and ball when I was five. I love being active and experiencing all sporting codes. When I am on the field, I feel free,” she said.
After this achievement, her next goal is to earn Gauteng East colours and eventually represent the province.
