TAG saves another abandoned dog

The organisation has noted a steady increase in dogs being dumped in open fields in the area.

The Animal Guardians (TAG) responded to a call from the Cloverdene community to rescue yet another abandoned dog.

The mature female boerboel was found on the corner of Eighth and Eleventh roads, on May 9.

According to the organisation’s Annie Jungmann, the dog was found sitting in the veld amongst rubbish.

“The dog was incredibly scared and disorientated with her surroundings but responded well to us approaching her,” said Annie.

“Due to presenting pressure wounds and being on heat, the dog was immediately transferred to the vet to undergo a complete medical check where a sterilisation will be performed. We suspect that the wounds are as a result of laying on concrete for extended periods.”

This is the third dog to be found abandoned in the past week.

The first was a pit bull terrier pup that was seen being dumped in a mielie field near the Petit Airfield, by a woman driving a white bakkie.

Members of TAG found this abandoned dog on Cloverdene Road, Benoni AH. He was riddled with worms and was diagnosed with jaundice. He had to be euphanised by a local veterinarian.

“On May 7, we found a very sick and malnourished dog on Cloverdene Road, Benoni AH,” Annie said.

“He was riddled with worms and was diagnosed with jaundice. It was deemed more humane to have him euthanised.”

Clearly frustrated by the latest rescue, Annie said they suspect the boerboel may have been dumped, possibly by unscrupulous breeders due to the animal no longer being fit to bear more litters.

“When these animals no longer serve their owners’ purpose for financial gain, they are merely discarded like yesterday’s rubbish,” she said.

“They deserve better than to be used as puppy mills, however, we are grateful for the observant community member that alerted us to the situation.

“This beautiful girl will remain safely in our care where she will experience love.”
