Actonville youth bring change to their community

" Leaders are amongst young people."

The youth of Actonville who form part of a charity organisation called Youth on Movement, have taken matters into their own hands to bring about change in their area.

Established in July 2021, the organisation aims to empower young people through its charity programmes.

Some of their programmes include educational drama plays, script writing and poetry which helps keep the youth busy.

According to the acting spokesperson of Youth in Movement, Tyrel Batties, these activities also help young people to discover their talents.

“Our organisation also offers rehabilitation programmes to young people who suffer from drug addiction,” said Batties.

The group, which consists of about 30 members, also dedicated their time to fix potholes in and around Actonville.

“Most of the youth who assist with fixing potholes are employed, so they carry out these projects after work.

“Some of our members who are employed assist those who are not employed with applying for employment. They also assist matriculants with applying at universities and colleges,” said Batties.

Batties said the organisation come up with a theme every year that will motivate residents to lend a helping hand.
“Last year’s theme focused mostly on strengthening the bond between fathers and their sons.

“This year’s theme will be around the issue of peer pressure, depression and unemployment.

Batties has advised residents of Actonville and its surroundings to join forces with the organisation.

“We are looking forward to engaging with residents to get more people to dedicate their time and volunteer in our projects.

“We firmly believe that future leaders are amongst young people.

“Our biggest sponsor, Dawood Chicken, sponsors us with meat when we carry out our projects.

“Last year during our mental health awareness campaign, we also received assistance from our ward councillor and the Mary Moodley Clinic offered services such as counselling to the youth,” Batties explains.

The Youth on Movement organisation is appealing to local companies to support their initiative.

Anyone interested in contributing to the sustainability of the project may contact Batties at 062 299 8141 or Marshall Bouwer at 082 806 2671.
