Brentwood Park elderly people robbed at gunpoint

Two cases of house robbery are under investigation by the Benoni SAPS.

Two Brentwood Park residents opened cases of house robbery at the Benoni Police Station on April 25.

The cases came after their belongings, such as laptops, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash, were taken.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele, the first robbery happened at 02:30 when a 65-year-old man was tied up.

“The 65-year-old, who lives alone, alleged he heard a loud bang in his house and then switched his phone torch on only to see two men, one armed with a firearm.

“The robbers allegedly asked for his wallet, and he replied that it was in the car. One of the men went to fetch it and then asked for his card PIN.

“He was tied up while the robbers searched the house. They stole his wristwatch, laptop and a cellphone,” said Sekele.

Meanwhile, the second complainant, an elderly couple, told the police they were asleep when they heard the door open at 03:40 and saw two men.

Sekele said the two men demanded money and a firearm.

“The husband started screaming, and one of the armed men hit the 68-year-old man in the head with the firearm.

“The men ransacked the house, stealing a laptop, car radio, cellphone and an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Sekele.

Because of the modus operandi, he said the police believed the same people committed these robberies.

Both incidents are under investigation.
