TAG Spayathon a barking success

Dogs and humans took to the streets to raise money for The Animal Guardians.

Runners, joggers, walkers and pups ditched the duvet and headed to the Benoni Northerns Sports Club to support The Animal Guardian’s (TAG) Spayathon on March 21.

Excited barks and wagging tails signalled the start of the 5km fun walk that snaked through Northmead, rousing residents and fellow fur pals from their Human Rights Day slumber.

The event was hosted to assist the animal welfare organisation’s ongoing outreach projects to spay and neuter animals from the underprivileged surrounding areas.

While the Northerns team ensured participants stayed on course, Dory and Missy marshalled their furry friends.

“Working towards better animal welfare, the biggest challenge TAG, as well as other animal shelters have, is preventing unwanted litters,” said TAG’s Annie Jungmann.

“We are staunch advocates for spaying and neutering animals to ensure population numbers are maintained.

“By having funds available to offer subsidised procedures, owners can provide for their pets and prevent shelters from being overwhelmed by the increasing numbers of abandoned and abused animals.”

According to avid runner Brenda Steenkamp, the spayathon was the perfect opportunity to clock her daily run with her friends.

“This is what heaven must be like – being able to take a leisurely morning run surrounded by so many doggies,” she said.

Jungmann thanked everyone who supported the event.
