Count on hospice’s care when life changes forever

When Pieter Dodd was diagnosed with end-stage Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), aggravated by Type 1 diabetes, his family’s lives changed forever.

After spending countless months in and out of the hospital, undergoing scans and having little time to spend with family, Pieter asked that the necessary home-based care measures be put in place to allow him to spend what time he had left surrounded by loved ones.

“From the moment you get the news that your loved one has been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, your world changes forever,” said Pieter’s wife, Charon.

“Many people think cancer is the only life-limiting illness. We now understand that there are a variety of illnesses that fall into this category. Thankfully, Hospice East Rand’s palliative care team were able to assist us on this journey.

“Through their holistic approach to home-based palliative care, we were completely included in Pieter’s care.”

Charon said that the appointed nursing sister, Sister Tracey Scholefield, took the time to get to know her husband and his family

“His condition was thoroughly monitored and our concerns addressed. We were fully prepared for what to expect,” she said.

“Hospice East Rand further assisted us in making complete use of our medical aid’s palliative care benefits, ensuring that all the necessary fund requirements were met.

“They helped us have many magical moments filled with laughter until the very end. We owe them a debt of gratitude.”
