UPDATE: Foundation’s walk to raise funds for Luke and Bethany now on March 4

Rain forced the organisers to postpone the event to February 18.

The Luke and Bethany Foundation fundraiser Sunset Walk on February 11 at the Parks Fresh Produce and Pizzeria to raise funds for Luke Steytler and Bethany Geoff had to be postponed to March 4, due to the weather.

Luke was born with Down syndrome. His mom’s doctor predicted this during her pregnancy because his body dimensions did not add up.

“He is a friendly, beautiful, energetic little boy who loves going out. He even considers going to the shops for bread and milk an outing,” said his mom, Tammy.

The six-year-old attends the Sowle Centre for children with Down syndrome and special educational needs. The proceeds from the event will go to helping the Steytlers cover Luke’s school fees of R8 000 a month.

“That does not include his occupational and speech therapies. By July, we are depleted. I then have to cover the costs myself, in addition to the school fees. We just can’t manage it,” Tammy said.

Bethany is a 16 year-old girl who suffers from Smith-Magenis syndrome, which is a developmental disorder that affects many parts of the body.

The major features of this condition include mild to moderate intellectual disability, delayed speech and language skills, distinctive facial features, sleep disturbances, and behavioural problems. This is an extremely rare disease.

She is currently in a home called Little Gems where she is happy and being cared for.

Her Mom Melanie, is raising funds to continue paying for the mothy fees as well as much needed medication.

The walk starts at 17:00, and registration is at 16:00.

There are prizes to be won. The cost is R50 to walk 2km. If you are interested in the walk, contact Tammy on 082 546 7184 for more information.
