SAPS Training College cats need to be sterilised

For more information about the organisation contact Leandri Ferri on 061 420 3668.

In recent years the feral cat population at the SAPS Training College, Northmead, has grown exponentially, resulting in the Paw Project taking over the reins last year to ensure that the colony is stabilised.

Although the felines’ daily needs are seen to by the college, urgent donations are needed to sterilise the furry residents.

Leandri Ferri and her team of volunteers have thus far successfully trapped, neutered and released 16 adults with an additional 10 set to make their way to the vet, this coming weekend (February 4).

“It is important that people realise that within one year, a molly can deliver up to 12 kittens,” said Leandri.

“With permission from the authorities, we aim to stabilise the colony living on the college grounds by ensuring that all the adult cats are sterilised.

“We further remove kittens born at the facility. Fosters assist in taming them after which they are rehomed, under strict protocols.”

Some of the kittens under the care of the Paw Project.

Once all the feral cats have been tended to it is expected that no new cats will be able to join the colony as the instinct to procreate has been removed.

“Through this intensive project the numbers will not increase and the need to remove and rehome kittens quashed,” she said.

“This initiative is necessary due to the increased amount of feral cats throughout the community. It all starts with responsible pet ownership and ensuring that they are sterilised.”

To ensure that the cats scheduled for the weekend’s sterilisation drive are successful, urgent donations are needed.

“Sterilisations are done at a reduced rate, however, the costs thereof need to be covered,” said Leandri.

“We’re appealing to the community for assistance as this drive will benefit not only the college cats but the community as a whole.”
