Gas tanker tragedy: death toll rises to 41

Lesufi said he has been briefed police are ready to take the matter back to court.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed today (January 18) the Boksburg gas tanker explosion death toll now stands at 41.

He added that the investigation has been completed and the docket has been forwarded to the relevant authorities for a decision.

Assistance for victims continues
Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels Fund today announced it will be donating R50 000 each to the Mashaba and Brits families.

Ndumiso Mashaba, his wife Neo, and his sister Zutivi Mlati, were killed in the explosion. The Mashaba’s were parents to a three-year-old son and a six-month-old daughter and Zutivi had an eight-year-old son.

Rosetta Brits buried her four children, Jamel (16), Sebastian (14), Adrian (12) and Gerrie (10).

The fund also donated R100 000 to the SA Hope Foundation to assist the numerous other families affected by the explosion.

SPCA on the ground
For the rest of the month, Boksburg SPCA will be conducting its door-to-door Plantation outreach on Tuesdays to assist the animals in the area.

During this door-to-door outreach, the society hands out food parcels and blankets and assists with sterilising and grooming animals, among other things.

One of the beneficiaries, Elsa Eales, expressed her gratitude towards the society for their initiative.

“I really appreciate what they are doing for us. May God bless them,” said Eales.

The SPCA assisted three of Eales’s family dogs.

Daisy was taken for sterilisation, Chappies for grooming and Roger for sterilisation and grooming.
