UPDATE: Water tower completion date extended again

Completion of the complex expected within the 2022/23 financial year

The completion date for the Northmead water tower has once again been extended, with the Ekurhuleni metro stating that the project will be completed within the 2022/23 financial year.

In February, the City Times undertook a site meeting at the Northmead water tower complex, along with MMC of Water, Sanitation and Energy Senzi Sibeko, to determine when construction will be completed.

At the time, Sibeko confirmed that the R44-million project, which was undertaken in May 2018, would be completed in June by the appointed contractor, FM Infrastructure.

In May the City Times again reported that work on the tower was still on schedule, despite disruptions caused due to higher than usual seasonal rain fall.

According to Zweli Dlamini, spokesperson for the metro, all contractors affiliated to FM Infrastructure have contractually exited the site as the tendered contract had come to an end.

“A new panel of contractors has been appointed to finish the remaining scope of work,” he said.

“The newly appointed contractors are in the process of finalising the contractual requirements and will be allocated sites in October, in order to commence work.”

He further stated that 76% of the water tower project, has thus far been completed.

“The project further includes the upgrade of the pump station to assist with water distribution. The pump station will be completed together with the tower,” said Dlamini.

“The upgrade is looking at the best possible solution to mitigate water interruptions caused due to load-shedding and other related power outages.”

“Engagement with internal departments such as energy, are at an advanced stage to resolve these issues.”
