Dead fish at Homestead a result of illegal fishing

“Removing the dead fish is a matter of urgency and we assure visitors that the water is safe”

The overpowering stench of dead fish has led to a full scale investigation being launched into illegal net fishing at Homestead Dam.

On September 15, residents around the popular recreational dam, where fishermen can often be seen enjoying the sound of the water lapping against the banks, noticed numerous dead carp floating on the surface, fuelling speculation that the dam may have suffered severe contamination.

According to Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby, residents promptly contacted her with regards to the sighting and a member of the East Rand Kayaking Club (ERKC) braved the water to investigate.

“Upon investigation, 300m of netting was found in the water,” said Goby.

Fishing nets that have been recovered from Homestead Dam, on September 15.

“It is suspected that the nets were cast into the water from the Mercury Street Bridge. As a result the fish died and a rose to the surface, bringing with it the nets.”

Members of the public were urged on September 16 to stay out and off the water, while the CoE’s Environmental Department launched its boat to remove the fish while searching for more nets.

“It is estimated that approximately 50 fish were ultimately trapped in the nets,” she said.
“Although the reasons for the netting is not clear, one can only assume that acts of this nature are perpetuated by desperate people trying to put food on the table.”
She however reiterated that this practice is illegal and carries hefty fines, if caught.
