Motorists shot at, seriously injured in Kingsway

A possible link between all three incidents, are being investigated

Members of the Benoni CPF responded to two attempted hijackings during which two motorists were shot, in Main Reef Road, Kingsway, on August 16.

According to CPF chairperson Dr Reza Patel, he was on his way to a sector meeting when he saw a body in the middle of the road.

“It was just after 18:30 and I immediately stopped to see if I could assist in any way,” he said.

“The man had been shot multiple times but was conscious. I called for medical assistance while trying to determine what had happened.”

It is alleged that man was an Uber driver of a Toyota Corolla on his way to pick up two male passengers.

“He claimed that while driving, the passengers pulled out firearms and threatened him and his girlfriend, who was in the vehicle at the time,” said Patel.

“He stopped the vehicle and the couple fled into a nearby veld while being shot at. He sustained multiple injuries but continued running until he collapsed in the road.”

Responding CPF members were able to locate the driver’s vehicle and his girlfriend, who was still hiding among bushes.

“We secured the scene and members of the Benoni SAPS were able to collect bullet casings,” he said.

At 22:00 members were once again alerted to a shooting incident, this time on the corner of Kingsway and Main Reef roads.

It is suspected that an off-duty security officer travelling in his private vehicle drove into rocks that had been placed on the road. This damaged the tyres and forced the security officer to stop next to the road.

“After he stopped the vehicle, several shots were fired at him through the driver’s window and he sustained multiple injuries,” said Patel.

“We secured the scene and police officers arrived to collect evidence. Both men are in hospital.”

The spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station Captain Nomsa Sekele confirmed that investigations into both shootings are underway.

“We are also investigating a similar incident that occurred on August 15, where a man and his colleague were travelling home from work along Paul Kruger Road, in Kingsway,” she said.

“It is alleged that when the driver stopped to drop off his passenger, they were approached by three men, two of whom were armed. The driver tried to flee but shots were fired through the windscreen. No one was injured.”
