Local aspiring actress bags new role on Mzansi Magic

The 25-year-old said her role will be a stepping stone towards achieving great things in her career

Hlengiwe Maseko (25) has recently landed a new lead role on Mzansi Magic’s short film called Moriri Waka.

The film will premiere on DSTV, Channel 161, at 20:30 on July 30 and will repeat on July 31 at 12:30.

Maseko will play the character of a teenage girl Liselihle, who sets out to change the school’s hair regulations but is met with a deeper challenge when she must face her principal who is also her mother.

The Farrarmere resident said the film is tackling a social issue and contesting the oppressive social standards, rules and regulations with regards to black women and their expression of their natural hair.

Maseko, who matriculated at Benoni High School in 2014, said she always had love for the performing arts.

“I’ve always loved acting, imitating people, singing and public speaking. In a world where authenticity is rare, my passion has always been about telling true, authentic stories,” said Maseko.

She has featured in projects such as featuring in a Johannesburg Theatre Stage Production called Who’s Next.

Maseko landed her first big break in the industry in 2007 when she was cast as Young Nala in The Lion King Broadway Production.

“It was the most beautiful and exhilarating experience ever. I lived my dream and shared my heart on the stage and I’ve never looked back,” expressed Maseko.

The 25-year-old added that the most challenging part of acting has to be the uncertainty.

“I knew from the beginning that the industry I was getting into was a very difficult and ruthless one but my family has been so supportive of my career.

“I have worked with renowned legends such as Lebo M, Dr Duma Ndlovu, Tsholo Mashaba, Brenda Mhlongo, Sello Maake ka Ncube and the late Andile Gumbi.

“My dream is to work with Nomzamo Mbatha, Terry Pheto, Thuso Mbedu, Renate Stuurman, Sindi Dlathu and many more,” said Maseko.

The actress mentioned that she believes that the acting industry is now starting to create opportunities for people who have actually studied acting.

“I do feel like there is still a long way to go. The government definitely needs to step up and do more to develop and improve the performing arts in our country,” said Maseko.
