Greater Benoni Child Welfare director, Vanessa Carelse said they held the awareness campaign in Daveyton after they discovered that most of the young people in the area suffer from substance abuse.

“We have invited different stakeholders to bring hope and light to the young people because we know that a township like Daveyton has the capabilities of producing young talented people.

“We believe that the talks will motivate them going forward and also encourage them to refrain from doing drugs,” said Carlese.

Speaking to attendees, Tonie van der Westhuizen of Barbarians for Christ said men shouldn’t be afraid to take risks in life.

“Men were built to protect, love and take care of their families. Be that man that will say no to drugs and look after your family.

“Be strong, have courage and you will overcome any challenge you encounter in life,” said van der Westhuizen.

Another guest speaker, Mike Hayter from Northfield Methodist Church encouraged the youth not to be afraid and seek help if they suffer from substance abuse.

Emily Malumane, an Auxiliary Social Worker from the Daveyton SAPS Victim Friendly Room said the police station is always open for those who want to report matters related to substance abuse.
