EMPD tip of the week

Cell phone usage while driving comes with a hefty fine

It is estimated that the causes of 25% of road accidents are due to motorists using their cellphones while driving.

According to the EMPD traffic charge book, anyone found guilty of using their phones while driving will receive a fine of R500.

“The use of a phone while driving is categorised as holding the device with one or both hands or any other part of the body, “ said Katlego Mphahlele, EMPD media liaison officer.

“We, therefore, urge motorists to equip their vehicles with the appropriate equipment which will ensure that they remain alert while driving.”

Some of the tips to consider before driving:
• Do not text and drive.

• Do not answer your phone while driving. Rather opt to find a safe place to park your and attend to the call.

• Connect your cellphone to a hands-free device.

• Pick your play list before starting your car.

• Map your navigator before you depart.
