Duck rescued from an open manhole

The bird was not injured and returned to the water after being set free

Inspectors from the Benoni SPCA recently rushed to Homestead Dam to rescue a duck from an open manhole.

Passers-by heard the bird’s distressed calls and immediately notified the society.

Due to the depth of the hole, the bird was unable to fly out and risked being swept away by the sewage water or suffocation.

Inspectors promptly rescued it and to replace the manhole cover that was removed.

According to Jane Trembath, chairperson of Korsmans Conservancy, volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that manhole covers are securely in place around the Korsmans Bird Sanctuary in an attempt to prevent similar incidents.

“Theft of the older steel manhole covers is a big problem and poses a huge risk to the wildlife living near natural water sources,” said Trembath.

“We urge the community to be on the lookout for any open sources and to report it immediately to the metro as well as their respective ward councillors.”
