Man killed after car plunges into the Benoni Lake

Motorists experienced delays following heavy traffic on the N12

A 56-year-old man died this morning (July 14) after the car he was travelling in lost control and plunged into Benoni Lake on the N12 westbound after the Tom Jones offramp.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, ER24 and various towing services arrived on the scene around 6:08 to find the vehicle in the lake after it veered into the roadside barriers and crashed into the lake.

“With help from a towing service member, ER24 medics were able to pull the vehicle to the nearby banks using the recovery vehicle. On closer inspection, medics found a man’s body in the vehicle. The man showed no signs of life and was declared dead,” said Meiring.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD media liaison officer said the man who works for a security company was on his way to work when the incident happened.

“Three lanes were closed while authorities tried to retrieve a white Mazda vehicle from the lake.

“A case of culpable homicide will be opened at the Benoni SAPS,” said Mokheseng.

Motorists experienced delays as traffic on the N12 was backed up from Putfontein Road up to Atlas Road.
