Hitman who allegedly gunned down female police officer arrested

The police officer’s husband was arrested last month

An alleged hitman accused of killing Const Prudence Maseko of the Daveyton SAPS was arrested on July 10 when he was about to flee to Swaziland.

He is expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court today (July 13).

The 34-year-old officer was attacked while on her way to work at the Daveyton SAPS, accompanied by her husband, who was driving her vehicle.

According to police, they were allegedly confronted by men in two taxis on Durant Road at Mkgoba Village.

“Passengers of both taxis allegedly approached the couple and fired several shots at the police officer whilst her husband ran for cover.

“On his return, he allegedly noticed his wife’s service firearm was missing and reported the matter to the police. He was then arrested on the same day in connection with the officer’s murder,” said Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Philani Nkwalase.

Nkwalase said the alleged hitman was arrested by members of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence and Johannesburg Metro Police after swiftly reacting to information about a suspect demanding cash for murdering the police officer from a ‘middle man’.

“The alleged hitman was spotted driving a vehicle fitting the description provided on Jules Street, Malvern Johannesburg. The 30-year-old was arrested and the vehicle was also seized. Through investigations the police also recovered her service firearm,” said Nkwalase.

Masuku’s husband and the alleged hired hitman are expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court on July 18.

A memorial service for the slain police officer was held at the Daveyton SAPS hall on June 30, attended by friends, colleagues and family.
