Metro working on clearing waste collection backlog
Refuse removal will continue over the weekend
The metro’s department of waste is working on the backlog currently affecting the waste collection schedule.
According to André du Plessis, MMC for environment and waste management services, stakeholders are locked in negotiations with the Weltevreden Landfill Site after its contract with the facility expired on June 30.
“This process has been ongoing for the past six months, however, no agreement has yet been reached,” said du Plessis.
“In the interim we are making use of the Chloorkop landfill, in Kempton Park as well as Platkop landfill in Heidelberg, which has resulted in a delay in turn-around time, thus resulting in a two-day backlog.”
He added teams will be on the ground over the weekend in an attempt to service areas where waste is yet to be removed.
“The negotiations are at an advanced stage and we hope that the matter will be resolved by July 15, when all services will return to normal,” he said.
“Daily updates are sent to all ward councillors and residents are urged to keep an eye on all community social networking sites for further information.”
