Local authors aim to inspire children through books

The book is about children exploring the outside world and playing

Authors Amanda Mahlangu (35) and Nonkululeko Nkosi (30) are hoping to inspire children with their newly published book titled Khanya’s first day at the park.

The self-published authors from Daveyton released their book on August 2021.

Mahlangu said the Covid-19 lockdown inspired them to write the book because everyone had been forced to stay indoors.

“We considered writing the book because we enjoy reading and writing. It took us nine months to publish the book,” said Mahlangu.

The book titled is titled ‘Khanya’s First Day At The Park.’.

She explained that the book is about children exploring the outside world and playing.

According to Nkosi, they played with a few different book titles, including The Big Yellow Side, but they felt Khanya’s First Day At The Park was more appropriate.

“The book is written for children in simple but descriptive English. We hope to translate the book into other languages in the future because only two percent of children’s books are written in our native languages.

“We intend to write another book where a boy will be the main character,” said Mahlangu.

Aspiring author, Amanda Mahlangu.

Nkosi said the most surprising thing they discovered while writing the book was how long it took them to edit.

“Having the first copy in our hands was incredible,” said Nkosi

The authors reminds first-time authors that a good story requires imagination as well as simplicity.

“If a writer puts on paper what they envision, the readers will easily understand the book,” said the authors.

The book is available on Amazon, Ethnikids Africa, Story Cafe (Fourways) and Smashbooks. To purchase the book directly, contact Nkosi on 061 433 0832.
