Multi-disciplinary operation cracks the whip on crime

Nearly 40 arrests were made during the 12-hour operation

Benoni SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Khumbulani Ndaba and the CPF chairperson Dr Reza Patel led a crime prevention operation in the CBD.

SAPS members in partnership with the CPF, patrollers, national and local immigration officers, EMPD specialised units, Nazef, ADT and No Jack security companies formed part of the operation.

They conducted inter-alia visits to various businesses as part of its zero-tolerance approach.

Second-hand goods businesses, foreign-owned outlets, and licensed as well as unlicensed liquor outlets were visited while stop-and-searches were conducted to apprehend those driving under the influence, as well as being in possession of drugs.

“During the 12-hour operation, 39 arrests were made and two business owners charged for violating the Immigration Act in terms of employing undocumented foreign nationals,” said Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the police station.

“Arrests include 35 illegal immigrants, one suspect on charges of shoplifting, two for driving under the influence and one arrest was made for dealing in drugs.”

Sekele said that EMPD specialised unit members maintained high visibility on the N12 to curb hijackings.

“Stop-and-searches were conducted and vehicle control points set up around Mckenzie Park.”

The station commander Brigadier Thabo Mputhi applauded and thanked all members for the unity in creating a safer environment for the community.

“Operations such as these will become a frequent occurrence to bring criminals to book,” said Mputhi.
