Bheki Cele visits slain Benoni Flying Squad officer’s family

The Police Minister also visited the officer's colleague who is recovering in hospital.

Police Minister General Bheki Cele and other SAPS management visited the bereaved family of slain Benoni Flying Squad officer Warrant Officer Mokgadi Joseas Mpepe in Thembisa today (June 17).

The 53-year-old officer was shot and killed just after the Etwatwa off-ramp on the N12 on June 13 following a shootout with suspects.

His colleague, Constable Nhlapo, was airlifted to hospital after he was found unconscious with gunshot wounds.

According to police reports, members from the K9 Unit of the SAPS were patrolling along the N12 highway when they noticed a state vehicle along the highway between Delmas and Daveyton.

Mpepe had been shot in the head and was found on the road next to the police vehicle.

Cele also visited the hospital where Nhlapo is receiving care. A memorial service was also held at the Benoni Flying Squad station today where friends and family paid tribute to Mpepe.
