Man loses control of car and knocks over two people

The 42-year-old has been charged with reckless and negligent driving.

A 42-year-old man drove into the lake after losing control of his vehicle in the early hours of June 10.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele, before losing control of his vehicle the 42-year-old allegedly knocked over two people who were standing outside a pub on Cnr Bunyan and Howard Street.

“The driver failed to stop after crashing into a female and a male. People who witnessed what happened chased after the bakkie until it drove into the lake and the driver subsequently disappeared.”

Sekele said around 10:00, the 42-year-old went to the police station to report that he was nearly hijacked before he lost control of his vehicle and drove into the lake.

“His lies caught up with him when the female victim went to the police station to report the accident after she was discharged from the hospital,” said Sekele.

The 42-year-old was then arrested and charged with reckless and negligent driving. He will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on June 13.
