Local foundation equips women with skills

The aim of the initiative was to encourage women to use opportunities so that they can become independent.

Essy Hope Foundation held a three-day training program at the Victor Ndlazwilane Hall in Daveyton from May 26 to 28.

Baking, massage, nails, and beauty were among the skills that were taught.

According to Essy Adams, the NPO’s founder, the aim of the initiative was to remove the stigma that women rely on men, which often leads to gender-based violence.

“I grew up as an orphan and knew what my mother went through before she died as she was a victim of abuse. I see that many women are going through the same she went through, hence, I decided to start the organisation.

“By training women I want to empower them to start their own businesses.

“These are not skills that require a large investment. It can be done in their living rooms, garages, or yards,” said Adams.

Qualified caterer, Mapontsho Mathekga demonstrated to the learners how to cater for different events.

Ncumeka ‘Mamthembu’ Dlulane, said: “I have seen stories of women being abused, and that triggers me as a woman because I myself have been in that situation before. These issues typically arise when a woman is financially dependent on a man and remains in an abusive relationship because she does not work or have a source of income.

“This was our first training program, and we hope to do another one in August.

Mapontsho Mathekga, a qualified baker and caterer said she believes these programs are necessary because if they teach these women, they will also empower other women.

Meanwhile, Sibongile Malaza, one of the learners said she joined the programme to learn skills because she loves working with her hands.

“I am unemployed, so the skills that I have acquired will enable me to do something,” said Malaza.
