Fidelity van bombed in CIT heist in Cloverdene

Nicole Drive in Cloverdene was closed due to the cash-in-transit robbery

Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for 10 suspects who bombed and robbed a Fidelity cash van on the corner of Putfontein Road and Nicole Drive in Cloverdene on June 3.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the van was attacked by a group of men driving a Mercedes-Benz.

“Three security guards were overpowered and were robbed of their firearms – two handguns and a riffle. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen before the suspects fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger,” said Netshiunda.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said when paramedics arrived at the scene around 14:20 they found the Mercedes-Benz well alight in the middle of the road while a wrecked cash-in-transit vehicle was on the side of the road.

“The vehicle had been completely blown open in an explosion with debris spread across the veld. Medics assessed the security guards who had escaped with minor injuries.

“No serious injuries or fatalities were found. The men were treated and later transported to nearby hospitals for further care,” said Meiring.

Residents who live around the scene where the cash-in-transit robbery took place helped themselves to what was left from the blown up Fidelity cash van.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects may contact their nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
