Etwatwa SAPS takes action against ATM robberies

Community members are urged to be aware of their surroundings at various ATM's in Etwatwa.

The Etwatwa SAPS social crime prevention coordinator, domestic violence coordinator, sector managers and flash office members conducted an ATM safety awareness campaign around crime hot spots in Etwatwa on May 17.

During the campaign, about 100 pamphlets containing safety tips from the South African Bank Risk Information Centre were handed to the public whilst other pamphlets were put up at local ATMs.

According to Etwatwa SAPS spokesperson Sgt Khensani Mathebula, the campaign intended to raise awareness after a spike of ATM robberies was noticed at certain hot spots.

Mathebula said they warned community members to be wary of strangers offering assistance at ATM points.

“The police have noticed that most of the victims are elderly people who are robbed at ATM points when they withdraw money.

“Perpetrators attempt to distract people to obtain the victim’s card or pin, We urge members of the community to report any criminal activities happening around ATMs to the police,” said Mathebula.

He urged customers to avoid using ATMs if there are suspicious people nearby.
