Scouts join initiative to mentor vulnerable boys

This project will ensure that there is a sustainable programme that responds to challenges that are faced by boy children through empowerment and mentorship.

In celebration of International Day of the Boy Child (May 16), more than 250 boys from across the East Rand spent a day learning about scouting on May 15.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development partnered with Scouts South Africa (SSA) to host various activities for the participants at the Arrowe Park Scout Centre in Lakefield.

The project is aimed at developing young boys to achieve their full potential as individuals and responsible citizens.

According to SSA regional commissioner for Gauteng Dr Angus Hay, with scouting being a peer based programme, members learn vital leadership skills by participating in various age appropriate programmes.

“Through these interactions our members receive valuable mentorship from positive role-models that aid their physical, emotional and mental development,” said Hay.

It is hoped that those in attendance will join Scout troops that will be established in poverty stricken areas, subsequently benefitting from the scouting ethos.

“This partnership, which is in line with the department’s Men and Boys programme, will benefit young boys across the province as it will provide mentorship for boy children on different issues such as behavioural change, emotional intelligence and spiritual upliftment,” said Morakane Mosupye, MEC for Social Development.

“I am pleased with this partnership as SSA has a proven track record of programmes that instil discipline in young boys, who ultimately become agents of change in our society. This provides an ideal platform for us to realise our mission and vision.”
