Update: Snake Road now open

A broken stormwater concrete pipe leakage was the cause of the sinkhole which resulted to the road closure.

Motorists who are using Snake Road to get to school or work are breathing a sigh of relief following the reopening of the road on May 16 at around 14:00.

The road had been closed since November, from Pioneer Drive to Golden Drive, as part of a Rand Water pipeline project.

It was also closed in 2019 due to a sinkhole and reopened in October 2020.

According to the metro, another sinkhole, which developed on November 19, grew to about 15m wide and 15m deep within a short space of time, leading to the most recent closure of the road.

It was found that a broken stormwater concrete pipe leakage was the cause of the sinkhole.
