Faith Launder dies at 105

"I don't like loud churches, because then I cannot hear God."

Family and friends of Thelma Faith Honey Launder sadly bid farewell to this Benoni legend on April 22.

Launder celebrated her 105th birthday in February, jovially dancing with nursing staff at The Old People’s Home on Howard Avenue and will be remembered for her kind and caring nature.

Born in Germiston, Faith moved to Northmead in 1948 with her husband Harry, where they laid down roots to raise their three children Denise, Alister and Jane.

Often seen walking to Lakeside Mall to do her shopping or popping down to Life The Glynnwood Hospital to visit patients, she made headlines in 2020 during the height of the Covid-19 outbreak.

This is after surviving the disease twice at the age of 103.

Joking she was quoted as saying that the only reason she beat the virus was that she did not know that she had been infected.

“Faith was a true legend and formidable role model,” said Jennifer Launder, daughter-in-law.

“She always put others’ needs before her own and set such a good example to all.”

She is described by her granddaughter, Claire, as being a beautiful, graceful and peaceful person with a glorious soul.

“She loved sewing, she made all her own clothes, I have never seen such mastery,” she said.

“Although she was always busy with all her hobbies, Faith made time for others and to dance.”

She will be loving remembered by her three children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
