Sewage a headache for informal settlement residents

“We have established a team of engineers who are trying to find a solution.”

Residents of Emaphupheni in Etwatwa said they are tired of dealing with the constant stench of sewage caused by a sewage spill brought on by a faulty pump station, according to community members.

One of the affected residents, Nomsa Twala, said the problem started in October as a result of illegal connections.

“Residents of Steve Biko informal settlement have been getting electricity illegally from the power box that operates the pump station.

“The situation where we live is frustrating because it is causing us health problems.

“We have complained about the issue, but nothing has been done,” said Twala.

Overflowing sewage in Etwatwa has become a common sight for residents.

Ward 65 councillor Siyabonga Moloi said he is aware of the situation.

“We have established a team of engineers who are trying to find a solution. Sewage trucks are dispatched to the area every week.

“If residents of Steve Biko could be supplied with electricity or relocated to another area, I think the problem will cease,” he said.

The City Times is awaiting comment from the metro.
