Local church lends a helping hand to KZN flood victims

The public is urged to help donate toiletries, non-perishable foods, clothing, blankets, drinkable water, boxes, bibles and teddy bears for the affected victims.

The Northfield Methodist Church has initiated an outreach programme to assist communities of KwaZulu-Natal who have been severely affected by the floods that ravaged parts of the province last week.

The church, which has become a drop-off point, is calling on the public to help donate toiletries, non-perishable foods, clothing, blankets, drinkable water, boxes, bibles and teddy bears for the affected victims.

According to Past Khaya Mnyanda, head of mission and outreach, the first truck is set to head to Durban on April 25.

“We have so far received tons of food parcels, water and other necessities from members of the public, including local organisations and churches.

“Since we’ve announced on social media and at church, the response has been amazing. We’ve also seen people coming into our church to volunteer to sort out the donated items.”

Mnyanda said as a church they are called to do missionary work, which forms part of the church’s values.

“The Bible encourages us to offer help where it is needed,” said Mnyanda.

Anyone who would like to donate can drop off the essential items at the church, corner Aerodrome Drive and Webb Street, Airfield, from 08:00 to 19:00.

For more information and those with the means to donate but can’t get to the church contact Mnyanda on 073 272 1842 or Quinton on 081 305 5520.
