Cat saved from snare

The Benoni manager has urged the public to report cases where animals have been caught with a snare.

The Benoni SPCA has condemned the use of a snare to catch animals.

This comes after a cat was recently rescued after it was found stuck in a tree with a snare imbedded in its neck.

According to Benoni SPCA manager Bronwyn Kleynhans, when inspector Thomas Mohlake arrived at the given address, he found that the cat had already been taken out the tree and they managed to cut the snare before taking it for veterinary care.

“We are happy to report that the cat, whom we have named Mr Kool, is doing very well and he is expected to make a full recovery. Despite being a stray, Mr Kool is a friendly and loving cat, and loves being petted.”

Kleynhans said the SPCA strongly opposes the manufacture, sale and use of any type of snare.

“Snares inflict incredible pain and suffering on an animal, and lead to a slow and cruel death. The public are urged to keep an eye out for snares, which can be made from a variety of items including cable ties and wires. The snares most often look like a noose made from wire, and are hung over known animal trails where animals walk regularly,” said Kleynhans.

The manager has urged the public to report cases where animals have been caught with a snare.

“If you do see a snare with an animal in it, please contact the Benoni SPCA immediately on 073 511 2261. If the snare is empty, you can carefully remove it using wire cutters. Please take the snare with you and throw it away where it cannot be reused,” said Kleynhans.

The public is urged to always use humane methods to catch stray cats. Kleynhans said the Benoni SPCA has cat traps available for rent and these traps do not harm the cats in any way.

If you would like to contribute to Mr Kool’s treatment and care, please send your donations to Benoni SPCA, First National Bank, account number 54475778429, branch code 252605 with reference Mr Kool.

Mr Kool is also going to need a new loving home. If you are interested in meeting him, visit the Benoni SPCA at 3 Klein Street, Lakefield, Benoni.
