Women create loving gifts for newborns

Our sets are made with joy

Add a little mix of love and a stitch of yarn and before you know it, the ladies of Mix & Stitch have created woolly blessings for babies in need.

Founded in 2015 by Sharon Kruger of Farrarmere, along with her group of 20 volunteers, they have undertaken to knit, crochet or loom blanket, beanie, bootie and jersey sets for newborn babies at state hospitals.

Once complete, the sets are placed in handmade nappy bags and distributed bi-monthly to maternity wards.

“According to birth statistics, 80 babies are born at state hospitals daily, and many of these mums have nothing warm to dress or wrap their babies in,” said Sharon.

“Our humble 50-parcel donations may not reach everyone, but every item is made with love and care. We believe recipients feel extra snug wrapped in items that were made with granny love.”

Meeting weekly, armed with knitting implements and a good dose of humour, the women complete their projects in order to fill their personal quota.

“Every item is uniquely made and members use various knitting methods,” she said.

“When we are not jabbering away, we share techniques and try new things. We are incredibly proud of our work within the community, but this project has also fostered strong friendships.”

She said each individually packed parcel contains toiletries for mum and baby if donations of these items are available.

“Childbirth is such a wonderful experience. Unfortunately, many new mums experience anxiety as they may not have the most basic items to ensure their child’s comfort,” she said.

“Our items are created to ensure mum and baby’s dignity.”

The project has a no-waste policy and every piece of yarn is salvaged, spun and used.

Continuous needs include wool, polar fleece and buttons, while store-bought items are also welcome.

“A single knitted set costs approximately R150 to make. We often use donated linen, such as pillowcases, towels and even upholstery material, to make the individual nappy bags,” she said.

“We do not turn our noses up to any form of fabric donation, as it allows us to stretch our imagination into making even more unique parcels.”
