Bodies of zama zamas found

This brings the total of illegal miner bodies found since 2014 to over 60.

Members of the Benoni SAPS were alerted to the bodies of four suspected illegal miners on April 12.

At 20:15, police were dispatched to the corner of Voortrekker Street and Snake Road, following a call made to 10111.

“Upon arrival, members found the bodies on the side of the road, wrapped in plastic and attached to tree branches, creating make-shift stretchers,” said Capt Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS.

“Three of the bodies had notes attached containing their names and contact information for next of kin. The other note only contained a name.”

According to Sekele, the victims are aged between 25 and 30.

“The manner in which the bodies were discarded is in line with zama zama tradition.”

“Although murder is suspected, an inquest docket has been opened and investigations into the matter are continuing. The cause of death has not yet been determined, as we are still waiting for the post-mortem report.

“Police operations in the all illegal mining territories are continuing.”
